Folks, our fire company has responded to two cooking related fires in recents days; both in York Township. The first fire on Saturday resulted in Second Degree burns to a patient. Did you know cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and injuries?
Here are some cooking safety tips from the NFPA.
1. Stay in the kitchen when cooking.
2. Don’t cook when you are sleepy or drinking alcohol.
3. Keep a lid near the stove top so if you have a fire, place the lid over the pan.
4. If you have a fire, turn off the oven or stove and call 911.
5. Review with your kids not to be near hot surfaces and not to use the stove or oven. Let that up to an adult.

Looking back in time
Going back in time...
Sometime in the early 1970’s a gasoline tanker overturned on Interstate 83 in York Township just before what is now exit 15. At that time, it was known as “dead mans curve” near the New Fairview Church. Today, Goodwill Fire Company keeps an inventory of class B foam in the engine room. Does anyone remember this accident nearly 50 years ago? (These are slides projected against a block wall.)

Rest in Peace Chief Emeritus Dale Slenker
It is with deep regret, that the members of Station 19 announce the passing of Chief Emeritus Dale Slenker. Chief Slenker gave 55 active years of service to the department. Chief Slenker joined the department at a young age when the firehouse was located about two blocks south of the current station. He rose through the ranks and was our fire chief in the 1970's. He was on the building committee for the current station and helped procure the departments first ladder truck. More recently, Chief Slenker was President on the Board of Trustees and our Fire Police Captain. He continued to help with fundraising and attended meetings regularly. Chief Slenker helped mentor and guide many Fire Chiefs who succeeded him through the years and was highly looked upon for his integrity and dedication to the department. He will be sadly missed by all of the members of Goodwill Fire Company # 1 York Township.
